Elderly Housing Development and Operations Corporation (EHDOC) celebrated an important milestone in Chicago on September 23, 2026, with the Grand Reopening of North Park Village Apartments following the completion of an approximately $26 million renovation and preservation initiative. Residents, community partners and leaders, EHDOC leadership, staff, and invited guests gathered on the historic North Park Village campus for a ribbon-cutting celebration recognizing the transformation of the property and EHDOC’s continued commitment to preserving quality, affordable housing for older adults.
Located on Chicago’s Northwest Side, North Park Village Apartments is home to 180 apartments serving adults age 62 and older. The comprehensive preservation initiative was designed to modernize the property, improve building systems and community spaces, and protect the long-term affordability of the community while maintaining the historic architectural character that makes North Park Village unique.
Preserving History While Investing in the Future
EHDOC’s relationship with North Park Village spans more than three decades. After managing and operating the property on behalf of the City of Chicago Department of Housing for more than 30 years, EHDOC acquired North Park Village Apartments in February 2021 and began the major preservation effort that culminated in this year’s Grand Reopening. The property holds a distinctive place in Chicago history. The campus was originally part of the North Park Village Tuberculosis Sanitarium Hospital before portions of the site were redeveloped by the City of Chicago during the early 1980s to provide housing for seniors. Its historical importance has since been recognized through designation as a Chicago Landmark and as part of a National Historic District.
Today, North Park Village Apartments offers residents access to community amenities including a large community room, library, computer center, and supportive spaces designed to encourage independence, connection, and an active community life.
The preservation project was made possible through collaboration among numerous governmental, financial, and community partners. Their collective investment helped ensure that this important source of affordable senior housing can continue serving Chicago residents well into the future.
Celebrating a Campus Built Around Community
The Grand Reopening also provided an opportunity to celebrate the broader history of EHDOC’s North Park Village senior housing campus. EHDOC operates five communities on the campus comprising approximately 590 affordable senior apartment homes. During the celebration, EHDOC recognized milestone anniversaries for Senate Apartments, established in 1980; North Park Village Apartments, established in 1982; Prete Apartments, established in 1991; Edward M. Marx Apartments, established in 2003; and J. Michael Fitzgerald Apartments, established in 2016. Surrounded by approximately 160 acres of natural preserve, the campus offers residents a unique combination of affordable housing, community amenities, green space, and a peaceful environment within the City of Chicago.
For EHDOC, the completion of the North Park Village preservation initiative represents much more than improvements to buildings. It reflects a long-term investment in residents, neighborhoods, and the belief that older adults deserve the opportunity to live independently in comfortable, dignified, and affordable communities.
As EHDOC continues its mission of Housing with a Heart, the Grand Reopening of North Park Village serves as both a celebration of what has been accomplished and a commitment to preserving affordable senior housing for the generations still to come.
